| Total Renal Care Tower and
Annex
Tacoma, Washington
The TRC Tower project was a redevelopment
of the existing 120,000 square foot Schoenfeld Furniture
building into an office facility. The building is a
10-story concrete frame building designed and built
in the 1920s. The project included an adjacent 2-story
timber framed annex. Work included designing a new lateral
force resisting system utilizing steel braces and shotcrete
shear walls in the tower to resist seismic and wind
forces. The annex was upgraded by attaching it to the
tower and adding shotcrete shear walls. The new lateral
systems were located on the perimeter of the buildings
to provide an open interior. The lateral system was
designed to minimize foundation modifications. Also
included in the design was removal of columns in the
basements to improve parking access, and structural
design was provided to allow installation of new elevators.
