| John A. Cherberg Building
Olympia, Washington
A rehabilitation and seismic retrofit of the John A. Cherberg Building on the Capitol Campus in Olympia. The building is a four-story concrete structure with a full basement, with a concrete slab on grade and conventional concrete spread footings. The average footprint is about 20,000 sf per level. The seismic analysis was performed with a dynamic computer model of the building and existing lateral force resisting elements were evaluated per FEMA-356. The seismic retrofit contained three major parts: three new concrete shearwalls to enhance the building’s lateral capacity, a recommendation for soils investigation, and a program for testing the strength of non-structural hollow clay tile partition walls.
